I was first introduced to the martingale collar from Great Dogs Designs last year when a family came to pick up their dog.
She showed me the wild tie-dyed, super-wide collar they got and I loved it. I knew Olaf needed one of his own. He just isn’t a tie-dye kind of dude.
Patterns
There are so many different patterns to choose from, I love it!
I went with the ever-trendy buffalo plaid pattern because it seemed like the most Olaf to me.
Size and Width
The sizes are large enough to accommodate a Newfoundland head and floof.
I ordered the XL Martingale 20-29 inches at a width of 1.5 inches. The size of the collar is perfect! and I love that it’s just a little bit wider than what I can find in stores.
I finally feel like I Olaf has a collar that was made with a Newfoundland dog in mind.
Buckle, Martingale, or Chain Martingale
You have options to choose your favorite style of collar.
I prefer martingales because when Olaf pulls on the leash, it tightens up around him much like a choker chain and he can’t pull out of it like he could with a regular buckle collar.
Construction
The construction of the collar is incredible. I don’t feel like Olaf could destroy it at all.
I also really like that the metal pieces are strong instead of cheap and flimsy. This will definitely hold up to years of use!
Where’s the Buckle?
One thing I am not a fan of is there is no buckle. I’m used to the martingale collars you can purchase from the store having buckles on them to make it easier to get it on your dog’s neck.
Without a buckle, because I am challenged and Olaf is Olaf, it made it difficult for me to adjust it to the right size for him. But we did manage.
