March 25
Celebrated Every Year
At Love Newfoundlands we’re starting our first tradition.
This isn’t to say that we don’t celebrate our Newfies everyday, but we feel it’s time to dedicate a specific day every year to celebrate them. Give your Newfie a hug and a peanut butter pupcake and let’s get this party started!
Why March 25?
Our very first Newfoundland was born on March 25, 2000. Her name was Jenny and she was really a special dog. Unfortunately, her life was cut way too short when a drunk driver swerved across the road to hit her on our nightly walk when I was about 9 or 10. She had to be put down that night and it was never the same without her.
Choosing her birthday to be National Newfoundland Dog Day was an easy choice to make.
Who Can Celebrate?
Anyone can celebrate National Newfoundland Dog Day! You don’t have to have a Newfie to join in the festivities, but having one is strongly encouraged.
Do I Have to Live in the USA to Celebrate National Newfoundland Dog Day?
Absolutely not!
You can live anywhere, even on Mars, the Moon, one of Jupiter’s moons, or a space station, and still celebrate National Newfoundland Dog Day.
How Do I Celebrate National Newfoundland Dog Day?
This is the really fun part of the holiday! You can celebrate any way you want. Don’t forget to take photos and tag us using the hashtags #nationalnewfoundlanddogday and #lovenewf and we might feature you on some of our social channels.
If you are drawing a blank, here are a couple of ideas to get you started!
- Make Pup-Cakes
- Play Fetch
- Take them to the park
- Give them a grooming spa day
- Take them to a lake (if it’s warm enough!)
- Go for a long walk
- Spend the day with them
- Start a new skill, obedience, water rescue work, draft work, confirmation, and there are many others to choose from

Awesome! Newfs are so special! Love that his momma’s name is Little Bear when in reality she’s not that little 🙂

So nice to find you. We had two Newfs, Ellie Mae and Pebbles. Ellie was a retired show dog and Pebbles was a rescue from from a puppy mill — who was whelped the day Ellie died. The stories and memories from 22 years of Newfoundlands are a great family treasure. It’s a big commitment, but there is great reward.
Niki says
Newfies are such a huge commitment, but like you said, the reward is worth it <3 Thank you so much for sharing about Ellie and Pebbles.
