I can’t believe this will be the fourth year celebrating National Newfoundland Dog Day! When I started the holiday, I had no idea it would catch on like it did so fast.
National Newfoundland Dog Day is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and appreciate our gentle giants who bring so much joy into our lives.
As we honor our dogs every March 25, here are nine delightful ways to make the day memorable for you and your Newfoundland.
1. Bake homemade dog treats
What better way to show your dog you love them than by baking some homemade treats.
I love to cook and bake and have recently started expanding my baking to include things for the dogs too.
Start the day by spoiling your Newfoundland with homemade treats straight from your kitchen.
Whip up a batch of nutritious biscuits using dog-friendly ingredients like peanut butter, pumpkin, and oats. Shape them into cute paw prints or bones for an extra special touch. Not only will your Newfie love the tasty treats, but you’ll also enjoy the bonding experience of baking together.
2. Have a spa day
A spaw or spa day is just what some Newfies need. Especially this time of year.
Spa days can be as simple as sitting on the living room floor brushing all the floof, especially if your Newfoundland is starting to shed their winter coat. or as involved as a full brush out, bath, and nail trim.
Don’t forget to clean out their ears and give them a gentle massage
3. Have a Newfie photoshoot
My inner photographer loves photoshoots of all kinds. And it’s even more fun when Newfies are involved.
Capture precious memories with your Newfie by organizing a photoshoot in your favorite scenic spot. Dress them up in a cute bandana or bow tie and strike a pose together. Snap away as you share laughs and cuddles, immortalizing the special bond you both share.
4. Relax with your Newfie
Take some time to simply relax and enjoy each other’s company. Curl up on the couch together with a cozy blanket and let your Newfie snuggle close. Whether you’re reading a book, watching TV, or simply enjoying each other’s presence, these quiet moments are priceless.
5. Buy your Newfie a new bed
Who doesn’t love a great night’s sleep? Why should your dog be sleeping on the floor when you can buy them an elevated bed like the Kuranda elevated bed?
We have had this bed for almost 5 years now and it is still just as fantastic as the day we got it. The fabric material has not ripped or sagged and the dogs are not able to destroy it. If your Newfie gets the bed dirty or decides to lay in the mud and then on their bed, cleaning it is easy.
All of our Newfoundlands that have been exposed to the bed actually love to lay on it versus the beds on the floor. So it won’t be another expensive bed they don’t use.
6. Play their favorite game
Engage your Newfoundland in their favorite game for some fun and laughter. Whether it’s fetch, tug-of-war, or hide-and-seek, let your dog’s playful spirit shine.
Not only will they appreciate the attention and exercise, but you’ll also strengthen your bond through shared enjoyment.
7. Have a dog movie night
Turn your living room into a cozy movie theater and have a dog-themed movie night with your Newfoundland.
Snuggle up together on the couch with some popcorn and enjoy classic dog movies like “Beethoven” or “Homeward Bound.” It’s a paw-some way to celebrate National Newfoundland Dog Day while spending quality time with your furry friend.
8. Take a hike
Explore the great outdoors with your Newfoundland by going on a scenic hike together.
Choose a trail with beautiful views and varying terrain to keep things interesting. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks for both you and your dog. Enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of nature as you embark on this adventure together.
9. Take your Newfie swimming
Celebrate your Newfie’s love for water by taking them for a refreshing swim. If it’s warm enough where you are. If it’s not warm enough, find some undisturbed snow for your Newfie to roll in.
Find a safe and suitable location such as a lake or beach where your Newf can splash and paddle to their heart’s content. It’s a fantastic way to cool off on a hot day while indulging in one of your Newfie’s favorite activities.
10. Share a story about your Newfoundland on social media
You could share any kind of story, but I personally love sharing the goofy stories.
When I was a kid we had a Newfie that was not the brightest bulb in the box. But that didn’t matter, we loved him all the same.
One day we left the tailgate of the truck down and the door to the cap was not open. He jumped on up into the truck happy as could be. When he was done he couldn’t find his way out because his shoulders kept hitting the truck cap. He just stood there and would bark periodically as if he was saying, “Hello? Can you please let me out? Please? Hello?”
He could have easily gotten out on his own, all he had to do was duck down a little.
