3 Winter Essentials for Walking a Newfoundland Dog
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean you get to stop taking your Newfie for walks. I have taken Trouble for walks when the temperature is well below zero and the wind a tad bit brisk.
Granted, those walks typically only last to the end of my block or a quarter mile along the river sheltered by the trees and she is incredibly disappointed when we turn around, but we get out there because Newfies thrive in the cold.
Not only will your Newfie be happy, but you getting outside during the winter instead of holing up in the house all season is hugely important for your health and well being too.
None of these are sponsored products. They are all items I have purchased and could not survive winter walks without.
Noxgear Lighthound Light Up Harness
The Lighthound harness was actually the first item I added to my winter walks with Trouble. She and I were walking later in the night around 7:30 to 8:00 pm when her pups were little and it was dark outside.
Since Trouble is a black dog and my winter weather clothes are all black, I felt incredibly uncomfortable walking in our street (we don’t have a sidewalk) in the darkness. We blended into the shadows quite well. Normally, I very much enjoy blending and not standing out too much, but that’s a no no when walking at night. Especially in North Dakota where everyone seems to know or know of at least one person that has been hit by a car.
So I went to Amazon to find a light up harness to make her visible.

The harness has a built in rechargeable colored LED light with multiple different settings. I like to keep it on the setting that flashes through the colors the fastest. I like to think it makes us even more visible.
During the day, the safety yellow color is visible and I like to think it makes Trouble a little bit more visible to the cars.

Wildson Hood
I actually saw this on the TikTok Shop and thought it was brilliant. My winter jacket I use for layering does not have a hood, so I’ve always made do with scarves and hats. Not anymore. This hood is fantastic!
The Wilsdon hood is like a scarf and hood all rolled into one.
You can pull the face covering down off your face if it’s warm enough or pull it up to cover your face and keep your nose warm.
I currently only have one Wilson hood in the velvet sherpa variety. I am planning on buying another for when this one is in the wash.
Emu Australia Shearling Boots
Furry shearling boots are my go to shoe in the winter.
Nothing else can keep my feet and toes warm quite like them. I have had a pair for the last 12 years that I refused to give up. Every year I would take them to the cobbler for repair because I couldn’t find any that fit like them.
I did try the Ugg brand, but honestly, ehh. They just didn’t fit and I kept going back to my old boots that were hanging on by a thread.
My biggest gripe with Uggs are they’re not wide enough, they only go up to mens 13, and they don’t have a zero drop sole like the barefoot style shoes I am accustomed to wearing the rest of the year.
Then I found Emu Australia.
Emu Australia is as close as I can find to zero drop barefoot style in a size that fits. Not only that, they looked like they had a significantly wider toe box than Uggs. And the part that really sold me is they went up to a mens 14. I have big feet and typically wear a mens 13W.
I love my new Emu Australia boots. And I can’t wait until they have the classic chestnut color back in stock in mens 14. I will definitely be ordering a pair!
